Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Irish whiskey to buy under £70?
Our top pick from David Brady of The Whiskey Note Podcast is Green Spot Single Pot Still — a beautifully balanced traditional pot still expression that punches well above its price. All ten whiskeys on this list deliver outstanding quality for the money, with picks spanning classic pot still, single malt, single grain, and innovative cask-finish releases.
What is the difference between Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky?
Beyond the country of origin, Irish whiskey is traditionally triple-distilled (versus the typical double distillation in Scotland), uses unmalted as well as malted barley (giving rise to the distinctive single pot still style), and is rarely peated — producing a smoother, lighter spirit than most Scotch. The "e" in "whiskey" is the Irish (and American) convention; Scottish whisky drops it.
Why is Irish whiskey spelled with an "e"?
It is a matter of national convention. Ireland and the United States historically spell it "whiskey" while Scotland, Canada, and Japan spell it "whisky". Either spelling refers to the same category of distilled grain spirit, but on a bottle from an Irish distillery you will always see "whiskey".
What is single pot still Irish whiskey?
Single pot still is a uniquely Irish style made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, distilled in pot stills at a single distillery. It produces a richer, oilier, more peppery spirit than standard single malt. Green Spot and the Titanic 5 Year Old Pot Still on this list are classic examples.
Is Irish whiskey better neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail?
Irish whiskey is exceptionally versatile. Neat or with a splash of water best showcases pot still and single malt expressions. Blended Irish whiskey is the classic base for an Irish coffee, while a single grain can shine in a highball with soda over ice. Try a few ways and see which you prefer.
How long does an opened bottle of Irish whiskey last?
Stored upright, away from direct sunlight and at room temperature, an opened bottle of Irish whiskey will keep its flavour for several years. Once the bottle is below a third full, oxidation accelerates noticeably — finish it within six to twelve months for the best experience.
